Rare and highly valued even in Japan. This is made from the same leaves and through the same process that produces our extraordinary Gyokuro. What's the difference? Where Gyokuro has all the veins from the leaves removed, Karigane is entirely composed of those veins. This means Karigane is very low in caffeine and very high in theanine and other antioxidants. Since the veins make up only 5-10% of the already rare Gyokuro leaves, only a few pounds of Gyokuro Karigane are produced each year and only in early spring.
